Greenstone or Pounamu Jewellery

Greenstone or Pounamu jewellery is made from a type of jade found in New Zealand – Nephrite Jade, located predominantly on the West Coast region of the South Island.  New Zealand has a strong cultural connection with Pounamu, and it is considered a taonga, or treasure.

Pounamu is a hard stone, and can be carved into a variety of forms, including earrings, pendants, and bracelets. Pounamu is also known for its rich green colour, which can range from a pale green to a deep forest green, some show flecks of white through to orange tones and there is also a unique flower jade that has captivating patterns resembling flowers.

The formation of Flower Jade occurs as the stone rests in the river, undergoing a process of tumbling and smoothing. Flowing water permeates the stone through minute fractures, leading to oxidation and the development of a distinctive yellow-gold hue, thus giving rise to the name Flower Jade.

One of the unique aspects of Pounamu jewellery is the meaning behind the designs. The Māori people believe that the stone holds spiritual power and energy, and the carvings on the jewellery often have symbolic meaning. For example, the koru design is a spiral shape that represents new beginnings, growth, and peace.

Pounamu jewellery is highly prized and sought after, both by Māori and non-Māori. It is considered a sacred treasure and is passed down through generations. Many Māori people will only wear Pounamu jewellery that has been gifted to them, as it is believed to bring good luck and positive energy.

In recent years, Pounamu jewellery has become increasingly popular, with many tourists and collectors seeking out authentic pieces.

Pounamu jewellery is a beautiful and meaningful form of jewellery with a rich cultural significance. It's an important representation of Māori culture and is a treasure to be cherished and passed down through generations.
